For the second straight year, Falling Creek Elementary was recognized as one of America’s Healthiest Schools. This achievement reflects the school’s commitment to creating a healthy, supportive environment for every student, staff member and family.
The Alliance for a Healthier Generation chose 1,376 K-12 schools nationwide this year for their commitment to advancing whole child health. Only 14 Virginia schools were recognized, and Falling Creek Elementary is the only central Virginia school on the list.
Falling Creek Elementary was honored in four of nine categories:
strengthening social-emotional health and learning
cultivating staff well-being
improving nutrition and food access
supporting school health services
Principal Reshaud Johnson said, “At Falling Creek Elementary, we believe that when students’ physical and emotional needs are met, they are well equipped to learn and grow. Our staff and community partners collaborate to meet the needs of the families in our school community. In addition, our goal is to teach our students life skills that will empower them to live healthy, productive lives. This award celebrates the vision, dedication and hard work that we pour into growing the healthiest generation!”
The school’s health-focused initiatives include vision and dental screenings for students; fresh fruit and vegetable snacks three times a week; an outdoor classroom that provides space for gardening and physical activities (including weekly yoga sessions); integrating community-building efforts into morning meetings; a calming space in each classroom; and a therapy dog that connects with students and staff members.
