School and county leaders celebrated construction progress on West Ridge High School by holding a topping-off ceremony June 16. The first new high school in 20 years in Chesterfield County Public Schools, West Ridge High is scheduled to open for students in August 2027. It is situated near Deep Creek Middle, which opened in August 2025, and Deep Creek Elementary, which will open in August 2026.

Topping off is a tradition in the construction world to put the final beam of a structure in place, along with symbolic items:
An evergreen tree represents good luck, safe completion and a wish for continued growth.
A broom represents a “clean sweep,” signifying no loss of life during construction.
The American flag represents the values of the United States, patriotism and the hard work of the construction crew.
Officials spoke about new beginnings and working together to support students, families and the community, then signed the beam before it was lifted into place.
Dr. Elizabeth Baber, principal of the new school, said the topping-off event is the first of many milestones: "Over the months ahead, we will engage students, families, staff and community members in shaping not only the physical space behind us, but also the heart and soul of West Ridge High School. Together, we will establish traditions, select a mascot and create a culture that reflects the values and aspirations of this community."

Located in the Matoaca District, the new school is part of a community facilities bond plan approved by Chesterfield County voters in 2022. The two-story school will cover more than 340,000 square feet, accommodate up to 2,400 students in grades 9-12 and cost $196 million.
Dr. John T. Murray, superintendent of Chesterfield County Public Schools, said the state-of-the-art building will serve students and teachers well for decades: "It’s clear that our leaders agree that Chesterfield County must provide top-quality environments for teaching and learning to affirm to families that they are making their homes in the right place. We can’t wait to welcome the first students, teachers and staff members to ... a building that provides great opportunities for the future."
Steven Paranto, Matoaca District representative on the Chesterfield County School Board, said the topping-off ceremony demonstrates a community vision becoming real: "This project is the result of collaboration, careful planning and shared commitment to providing the very best for the best among us, which is our students. Modern schools like West Ridge High are more than just educational spaces. They’re symbols of hope and opportunity and progress."

Kevin Carroll, Matoaca District representative on the Chesterfield County Board of Supervisors, said, "On behalf of the Board of Supervisors ... I want to express how thrilled and proud we are to partner with the School Board on a really important project like this. ... We know how critical it is to invest in schools, and to do so responsibly."
