At the May 12 School Board meeting, draft student calendar dates were proposed for the 2027-28 school year. Two calendar versions were presented for consideration. Through its Standards of Accreditation, the Virginia Department of Education requires that schools provide either 990 teaching hours or 180 school days each school year. The two proposed versions meet those requirements in different ways, which results in differences in the number of school days, when the school year begins and the number of additional hours built into the calendar to address closures due to inclement weather or other unexpected events.

Here are features that are the same in both calendar versions presented.

  • Staggered first-day start

  • 2-week winter break (Dec. 20-31)

  • 1-week spring break (April 3-7)

  • Additional student holidays on Sept. 3, Sept. 6, Oct. 11, Nov. 1-2, Nov. 24-26, Jan. 17, Feb. 21, April 14, May 29

  • Nine early-release days for students (all on Fridays) that allow teachers time for either professional learning or clerical time for grading

  • Friday, June 2, 2028, is the last day of school

Here are how the calendar versions are different.

Version 1

  • 178 days of school, starting on Monday, Aug. 23, 2027

  • Provides about 51 hours to address inclement weather or other unscheduled closures

Version 2

  • 180 days of school, starting midweek on Thursday, Aug. 19, 2027

  • Provides about 63 hours to address inclement weather or other unscheduled closures

Before the School Board votes to approve a calendar for 2027-28, we’re seeking additional feedback.
