Administrative appointments
Megan Rihn-Smith was named principal of Matoaca High, effective July 1. She is currently assistant principal at Patrick Henry High School.
Awards and recognitions
The Superintendent’s Student Advisory Group on Education was recognized.
Recognized for their accomplishments were the Monacan High girls swim team and five high school yearbooks.
Recognizing staff members
The board recognized Sheila Pope as the school system’s School Social Worker of the Year, recognized Jessica Sanchez of James River High for being named Virginia’s winner of the Outstanding Speech and Debate Educator Award and recognized Dr. Amanda Voelker and Dr. Randi Smith for their achievements in Virginia’s Principals of Distinction program.
These bus drivers were recognized for outstanding service:

The School Board recognized Hope Point Church.
Board actions
The consent agenda was approved as presented. Memos of interest included:
Reaffirmation of School Board code of conduct and governance handbook
Resolution recognizing schools for supporting military service members
The board approved the 2026-27 local special education annual plan.
Board discussion
The board received a memo about naming the west area high school, which is scheduled to open in August 2027.
Superintendent’s report
The superintendent’s report included a meaningful moments video about mentors at Carver Middle School; an update about state legislation; information about upcoming events; and information about Bellwood Elementary’s transition from a year-round calendar to a traditional calendar for the 2026-27 school year.
