Stepping into the shoes of a CIS student
More than 40% of Chesterfield students are economically disadvantaged. Communities In Schools of Chesterfield recently invited adults to experience a day in the life of a child living in poverty with the powerful “I See You” simulation. Teachers, school staff members, local leaders and community partners participated to understand barriers facing young people and how Communities In Schools works to overcome those barriers.
Participants felt the weight of problems students face when their families have limited resources, through real-life examples. They explored and identified with the feelings of these students – anxiety, insecurity, stress – that arise in their day-to-day lives.

Sarah Fraher was a strong leader, educator, advocate and trailblazer. She cared deeply for students and teachers and set high expectations while ensuring everyone felt valued and able to achieve. She often observed, “Aren’t we lucky?” when faced with not-so-great things — a reminder to always look for the good.
She served as the first principal of Elizabeth Davis Middle, then led Manchester Middle for eight years before retiring in 2018. Sarah died later that year, leaving thousands saying, “Aren’t we lucky to have known her?”
