James River High’s speech team just won its fifth VHSL state championship! James River has dominated since earning its first title in 2021, then achieving four straight championships (2023-2026).

Also at this year’s statewide competition, team member Luke Baker won an individual first place in extemporaneous speaking.

Coached by Jessie Sanchez and Joey Sanchez Tucker, James River High took first place at every invitational it attended this season and continued its winning streak at regionals and super-regionals. The team prepares, practices and perfects from August through June following its motto: “Winning is a consequence and not an objective.”
