Student watching chefs make food

Matoaca Middle students recently participated in a unique work-based learning experience that connected classroom learning with real-world culinary careers. On March 4, students from Beth Godfrey’s family and consumer sciences classes went to Fort Lee to attend the 50th Joint Culinary Training Exercise, one of the largest and most prestigious military culinary events in North America.

Professional chefs preparing meals

Students observed highly skilled military chefs from every branch of the U.S. military competing and demonstrating advanced culinary techniques in a fast-paced, professional environment. The competition also featured teams from Great Britain, France and Germany, giving students insight into global culinary styles and standards. A highlight was a demonstration by nationally recognized chef Carla Hall, who shared her culinary expertise and passion for the industry. Students had the opportunity to watch chefs prepare intricate dishes, learn about the discipline and teamwork required in professional kitchens and gain insight into culinary careers within the military and civilian sectors.
