Awards and recognitions
Recognizing career and technical education
Career and technical education programs within Chesterfield County Public Schools were recognized for winning three awards in the Virginia Department of Education’s Creating Excellence Awards and for student success in statewide competitions.
Carver College and Career Academy and Midlothian High were recognized for winning the Stay in the Game Award from the Virginia High School League.
Falling Creek Elementary was recognized as one of America’s Healthiest Schools. It is the first school in central Virginia to ever be recognized.
The School Board recognized Dominion Energy and Sentara Health for supporting El Librotazo.
Recognizing staff members
These bus drivers were recognized for outstanding performance:

Phillip Lee, Area 2, Bus 734, one year of service
Jermaine Garcia, Area 3, Bus 714, two years of service
Keana Hullette, Area 4, Bus 37, nine months of service
Gregory Russell, Area 5, Bus 598, seven months of service
Driver of the Year for 2024-25 Charles Barrerio, Bus #849, two years of service
These food service employees were recognized:
Outstanding employee: Melissa Banks, assistant manager, Reams Road Elementary, three years of service
Outstanding manager: Linda Lassen, cafeteria manager, Bellwood Elementary, 29 years of service
Board actions
The consent agenda was approved as presented. Memos of interest included:
Memo #119-25: Appropriation of General Obligation Bond Net Premium
Memo #131-25: Appointment of Members to School Board Advisory Committees
The board approved attendance zone changes for Bensley Elementary and Falling Creek Elementary (memo #125-25) that take effect for the 2026-27 school year.
Via memo #126-25, the board chose Deep Creek Elementary School as the name for the west area elementary school and placed the school on the tier 3 schedule (9:25 a.m.-3:55 p.m.).
The board returned Bellwood Elementary to the traditional calendar used by all other Chesterfield County schools, beginning with the 2026-27 year (memo #127-25).
The board approved memo #128-25 to update School Board policy 5431, effective immediately, related to employees in driving positions and applicants for driving positions.
Superintendent’s report
The superintendent’s report included a meaningful moments video about the start of the school year along with highlights of work and progress throughout Chesterfield County Public Schools.
