The past few years have taken a toll on children’s emotional and social well-being. To support students and families, Chesterfield County Public Schools now offers a connection to mental health telehealth services for students in grades 6-12. These free, virtual sessions by Hazel Health can help students manage stress, anxiety or sadness. Just as regular checkups help with physical health, these sessions support mental well-being so students can thrive.

Here are details about how parents can opt in for this free resource:

How does telehealth work?

Hazel Health virtually connects students with experienced therapists (such as licensed clinical social workers, licensed professional counselors, licensed mental health counselors, licensed marriage and family therapists and associate therapists). The therapist will offer one-on-one counseling via a computer, tablet or smart device. Students can use their school-issued Chromebook. A cellphone can also be used.

What are the benefits of this approach to counseling?

  • High-quality care that is free for students regardless of insurance coverage

  • Fast, flexible scheduling for one-on-one sessions with licensed therapists who are diverse and speak more than 30 languages

  • Removal of barriers like transportation and waitlists

What services does Hazel Health provide?

The program can help students with anxiety, depression, fears, stress, grief, social skills, mood or behavior changes, bullying and more. This resource does not replace emergency services.

Almost half of Hazel Health therapists are bilingual, speaking more than 30 languages including English, Spanish, French, Vietnamese, Korean, Tagalog and American Sign Language.

Who can schedule appointments for students?

Parents or guardians must opt in for this resource before students can connect with Hazel Health. Students cannot opt themselves in. School employees cannot schedule appointments for students.

How can parents schedule telehealth appointments for their child?

This simple process is how to get telehealth support for your child:

  • First, sign in to ParentVUE in order to opt in to Hazel Health. After you opt in, then Chesterfield County Public Schools will share your information with Hazel Health (usually this happens within one business day). Here are instructions in English and Spanish to use ParentVUE to opt in.

  • Next, go to this Hazel Health page to create an account and complete the online consent.

  • Finally, schedule an enrollment call and your child’s first appointment with Hazel Health.

What information will Chesterfield County Public Schools share with Hazel Health?

When a parent or guardian completes the opt-in form in ParentVUE, Chesterfield County Public Schools will share this information with Hazel Health in order to show that the student is enrolled:

  • Student information shared: ID number, first and last name, gender, birthdate, grade level and school

  • Parent or guardian information shared: first and last name, cellphone, home phone, email, address and relationship to student

How many sessions will my child have?

The first telehealth appointment is an initial assessment so the therapist can identify the student’s mental health needs. On average, students improve in six therapy sessions. If the therapist sees a need for longer term care, then Hazel Health will provide recommendations based on the family’s preferences and ability to pay.

When are appointments available?

Telehealth appointments are available between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. Monday through Friday. Sessions cannot take place at school.

Where can appointments take place?

The student is usually at home during the sessions. Hazel Health requires a parent, guardian or trusted adult to be on site during telehealth appointments. Telehealth appointments cannot take place at school.

What should I do if my student has a mental health emergency?

Hazel Health sessions do not take the place of emergency services. Call 911 if a child needs immediate medical attention or in case of a life-threatening emergency. Go to the nearest emergency room for an emergency mental health assessment.

Will school staff members know that my child is receiving mental health telehealth services?

Hazel Health does not share information about a student’s telehealth services with schools, school staff members or Chesterfield County Public Schools. Parents can choose to share information with school staff members if they believe it will help the school support their student.

What if my family does not have insurance?

Students in grades 6-12 can receive Hazel Health services whether or not they have insurance. If families provide insurance information, then Hazel Health will attempt to get reimbursement from the insurance company for services provided, but families are never charged for Hazel Health sessions. Any copay or other out-of-pocket fee is covered by the contract that Chesterfield County Public Schools has with Hazel Health so there is no cost to families.

What other school systems offer this telehealth opportunity?

Some of the Virginia school systems that offer Hazel Health are Henrico County Public Schools, Fairfax County Public Schools and Prince William County Public Schools. To see all of the school systems across the country that provide this resource, go to hazel.co/get-started.
