Topping-off ceremony celebrates progress on $52 million school scheduled to open in 2026

Chesterfield County Public Schools marked a major milestone in the construction of the new west area elementary school Aug. 11 with a topping-off ceremony, a tradition in the construction industry celebrating placement of the final structural beam and symbolizing strength, partnership and progress.

“This moment is symbolic. The final steel beam represents not just the completion of a building’s framework,” said School Board Vice Chair Lisa Hudgins. “It’s a visible reminder that we are building something lasting, something that will shape the lives of students for decades. This school will offer modern, adaptable spaces that support collaboration, creativity and curiosity. It will reflect the energy and enthusiasm of the students who will walk its halls and the dedication of the educators who will lead them.”

Signed by school and county leaders, the beam was hoisted into place atop the district’s 41st elementary school during the event. The beam was adorned with symbols:

  • An evergreen tree to symbolize good luck, safe completion and a wish for continued growth

  • A broom to represent a “clean sweep” (no loss of life during the construction process)

  • An American flag to show patriotism and the hard work of the construction crew

“This school reflects the innovation, flexibility and student-centered design that define the future of education in Chesterfield County,” said Superintendent Dr. John Murray. “It will be a place that sparks curiosity, invites exploration and nurtures young learners for generations to come.”

Scheduled to open for students in August 2026, the new school in the Matoaca District is part of a community facilities bond plan approved by Chesterfield County voters in 2022. Virginia Public School Authority bonds will cover the building’s $52 million budget. The school’s design is based on Chesterfield’s elementary school prototype, with the community selecting the exterior colors. The two-story school will accommodate up to 1,000 students in kindergarten through fifth grade.
