Abigail Willis, a rising senior at Cosby High, was chosen to participate in this summer’s Washington Journalism and Media Conference at George Mason University. She will join 300 students from all over the country for an intensive study of journalism and media. Throughout the July 7-12 conference, student correspondents will share their experiences via Instagram.
A captain of Cosby’s speech and debate team and a student council leader, Abigail was chosen for the conference based on her academic accomplishments and demonstrated interest and excellence in journalism and media studies. She wrote, “Competing with Cosby’s speech and debate team activated my civic engagement, allowing me to become fascinated with how media influences the trajectory of politics within America. … Ultimately, participating on the team has sharpened my communication skills, preparing me to enter a career in journalism and media.”
During the conference, youth correspondents participate in hands-on, experiential learning through decision-making simulations that challenge them to solve problems and explore the creative, practical and ethical tensions inherent in journalism and media. The experiential portion of the program is complemented by speakers who are well-known leaders in the media community. Presenters include prominent journalists, CEOs of major media outlets, researchers and recent college graduates successfully entering the field.
